Nov 2025: Rethinking Motivation – A Workshop for Parents of Neurodivergent Children

Motivation Is Not Broken; It’s Different

Is your child’s motivation unpredictable, lighting up for some things while shutting down for others? Do you find yourself wondering how to encourage them without endless battles, bribes, or frustration?

This small group workshop is designed to help parents of neurodivergent kids reframe motivation, understand it through a strengths-based lens, and build strategies that truly fit your child and your family. Grounded in current research and practical application, these sessions provide a space where parents can learn, reflect, and experiment with new approaches that honor the way their child’s brain works.

Over the course of four weekly sessions, we will use ADHD and autism as case studies to better understand diverse motivational profiles. You will learn how different brains respond to tasks, rewards, and expectations, and discover practical ways to partner with your child’s unique system. Together, we will move from theory to practice by creating personalized tools and a family motivation plan designed around your child’s strengths and your family’s needs.

What To Expect:

Together, we will explore how motivation shows up differently across neurodivergent profiles such as ADHD, autism, anxiety, giftedness, or learning differences. Instead of trying to “fix” a lack of motivation, we will focus on recognizing strengths, uncovering sparks, and building supportive environments where your child can thrive.

Each session combines research-backed insights with strengths-based, family-centered practices. You will gain clarity on why conventional motivators do not always work, learn to identify what truly energizes your child, and create strategies that work in the real context of your home life.

Weekly Themes:

Week 1: What Is Motivation, Really?
Reframe your understanding of motivation as difference, not deficit. Learn how the brain’s reward system works and begin identifying your child’s unique “motivation sparks.”

Week 2: ADHD and Autism as Case Studies
Explore how ADHD and autism highlight diverse motivation pathways, interest-driven vs. meaning-driven, and how current research can inform strategies you can apply to your own family.

Week 3: Building Your Family’s Motivation Toolkit (Part 1)
Create a personalized “Motivation Map” for your child, highlighting strengths, sparks, blockers, and effective supports. Learn practical, strengths-based tools that work across profiles.

Week 4: Building Your Family’s Motivation Toolkit (Part 2)
Practice applying strategies to everyday challenges like homework, routines, and transitions. Draft a Family Motivation Plan that is research-informed, strengths-focused, and tailored to your family’s needs.
